FAQs
Do I need to pre-book my garden admission and steam train tickets?
No, visitors are welcome to pay on arrival at the Visitor Entrance, or pre-book their tickets online. We do offer a 10% discount for pre-booked online tickets, but we do not have a limit on visitor numbers so you are very welcome to pay on arrival if this is more convenient for you. Please be aware that we are a cash free site and payment is by card only.
When is the best time to visit Exbury to see the rhododendrons and azaleas?
Our collection of rhododendrons and azaleas is spectacular in late April and throughout May. Flowering does extend into June with late-flowering rhododendrons and deciduous azaleas taking the limelight during early summer. This does vary each year so please do contact us if you would like an update on the current situation.
Am I allowed to picnic within the gardens?
Absolutely! There are two approved picnic sites within the gardens, one overlooking Jubilee Pond in Yard Wood, and the other at the Sakura Cherry Orchard. Litter bins are provided at these sites, though where possible we request that any litter be taken home after a visit.
Is car parking free of charge?
Yes. There is an extensive car park for approximately 250 vehicles and a parking area for around 50 coaches. During our busiest times, car park attendants will direct traffic into the site or an overflow car park across the road from the main entrance. Bays for blue badge holders are clearly marked at the front of the car park, closest to the Visitor Entrance.
Am I allowed to bring dogs into the gardens?
Dogs are very welcome at Exbury Gardens, inlcuding on the steam train and in Mr Eddy’s restaurant. We simply ask that they are kept on a short lead and leave nothing behind but paw prints!
May I bring in radios and footballs or children's bikes and scooters?
No, we’re afraid not. Exbury Gardens is renowned for its peace and tranquility therefore we request that radios, footballs, children’s bicycles or scooters are not brought into the gardens.
Is there a lost property office?
Any lost property is handed in at the Visitor Entrance. If you think you may have lost something at Exbury please contact us on 02380 891203 or [email protected]
In the case of extreme weather, will the gardens be closed?
The gardens may occasionally be closed in the event of extreme weather conditions such as high winds or snow and ice. In such situations, our website and social media channels will be kept up-to-date with latest opening information. If in any doubt about whether the gardens will be open on a particular day, do contact us on 02380 891203.
I'm visiting in the summer, what is there to see?
At the beginning of June visitors can enjoy the vibrant colours and scents of late-flowering rhododendrons and deciduous azaleas. In addition to this we also have a number of gardens planted specifically for summer colour and interest.
Centenary Garden – a contemporary garden planted to mark the 100th anniversary of Exbury Gardens
Sundial Garden – peacefully atmospheric with exotic shrubs and topiary.
Iris Garden – recently refurbished a replanted with numerous varieties. Flowers from June.
Herbaceous Garden – fragrant and diverse, some of the largest herbaceous borders in the UK. Wonderful throughout the summer.
Hydrangea Walk – blues and mauves move into pinks and white, stunning during late-summer.
River Walks – offer shady tranquility with beautiful views over the Beaulieu River.
Are you open all year round?
For 2025 we are open between 8th March and 2nd November 2025 (10am – 5.30pm). We will also be open for our Christmas Fair and other festive events on the weekends of 29th-30th November and 6th-7th December.
Is there a discount for large groups?
Yes. Groups of 15 or more can enjoy a discounted rate for both gardens admission and steam railway rides. Groups must pre-book to receive this discounted rate. Check out our groups page for further information on group benefits.
Can I come back throughout the year on multiple occasions?
Visitors who purchase a Friends of Exbury annual membership can enjoy unlimited access to the gardens throughout our open season. For more information visit our membership page.
Can I fly a drone?
No, the use of drone or UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) is not permitted on or over Exbury Gardens or the Exbury Estate.
Can I use disposable barbecues?
No, disposable barbecues are not permitted at Exbury Gardens, as they pose a considerable threat of fire and are likely to negatively affect the longevity, beauty and atmosphere of our gardens. The same also applies for any other portable cooking device such as camping rings.
